“Remaining years” is the SSA period life expectancy at that exact age. “Average attained age” simply adds current age to remaining years; it is a population summary, not a promised age of death.

Read the number correctly

Reaching an age changes the question.

Life expectancy at birth and life expectancy by age are not interchangeable. Once a person has reached age 70, risks from infancy and earlier adulthood are already behind them. The relevant table value is the average remaining lifetime conditional on reaching 70.

The SSA calls this a period life table. It applies mortality rates observed for 2023 across the rest of a hypothetical person's life. It does not forecast future medical progress, epidemics, environmental changes or the circumstances of one individual.

The source separates male and female mortality schedules. This page preserves those source classifications instead of treating them as a complete description of sex or gender. It makes no inference about identity, health status or an individual's biology.

An average also hides a wide distribution. Some people die much earlier and some live much longer. Do not use this table alone for medical, insurance, retirement or legal decisions.

Source and reproducibility

One official table. No mystery model.

Every number comes from the Social Security Administration Actuarial Life Table: Period Life Table, 2023, as used in the 2026 Trustees Report. We retained exact age and the male/female life-expectancy columns for ages 18–110, rounded exactly as published.

The source population is the “Social Security area population,” which includes more than residents of the 50 states alone. Read the SSA note for its complete geographic and administrative definition.

Life expectancy by age FAQ

What does life expectancy by age mean?

It is the average remaining number of years for people who have already reached a particular age, under the mortality rates used by the period life table.

Is the average attained age a death prediction?

No. It is current age plus average remaining years. It describes a population midpoint and cannot identify when any individual will die.

Why can an 80-year-old have more than a few years left?

Because reaching 80 means the person has already survived risks that affected younger members of the original population. Remaining life expectancy is conditional on having reached the selected age.

How often will this data be updated?

We will review the source when SSA publishes a new Trustees Report period table. The release year and page update date will remain visible.
